National Office for Victims

Established in November 2005, the National Office for Victims is a central resource for victims of offenders under federal responsibility. It provides:

  • General information for victims and the public
  • Referrals to the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) and the National Parole Board (NPB) for specific enquiries
  • A victim's perspective in national policy development

In addition, the office responds to complaints about the services provided to victims by the CSC and the NPB, once all existing avenues for complaint have been exhausted.

The National Office for Victims is designed to complement several services offered by the CSC, the NPB and the Policy Centre for Victim Issues at the Department of Justice.

Other services for victims

Registered victims can obtain a copy of NPB decisions, present impact statements at NPB hearings and attend hearings as observers. To register as a victim, contact the CSC or call the NPB's toll-free number, 1-866-789-4636. CSC and NPB victim services officers (i.e. CSC's Victim Liaison Coordinators and NPB's Regional Communications Officers) will continue to be the primary source of ongoing information for registered victims.

Victims can also obtain financial assistance to travel to NPB hearings of the offender who harmed them. This service is administered by the Policy Centre for Victim Issues. For more information, visit the following pages on the Centre's website:
