The Canadian Museum of Civilization unveils eighth season of Ottawa Citizen's See and Hear the World concert series: Nine fabulous world music concerts!

Hull, Quebec, August 23, 1999 — Music fans in the capital will once again savour the sounds of the world, with the eighth season of the Ottawa Citizen's See and Hear the World concert series running from September 18, 1999 to May 12, 2000. Nine groups of performers from around the globe will participate in this acclaimed world concert series, produced by the Canadian Museum of Civilization.

From its modest beginnings in 1992 with five presentations of music, dance and theatre, See and Hear the World has grown into one of Canada's premiere world concert series. In 1998–99, four of twelve concerts sold out, and all performances met with enthusiastic responses from audiences that revelled in the mastery of art forms from around the world. Highlights included a sell-out crowd singing Chilean songs of freedom with Illapu, the Nordic sounds of Sweden's energetic Väsen, and the enthusiastic dancing inspired by Sierra Maestra's Cuban son music. Since its inception, the series has highlighted world music superstars like Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Muzsikás, Vishwa Mohan Bhatt, Boukman Eksperyans, Oumou Sangare and the late Mahlathini with the Mahotella Queens.

Series producer Ron McRae has put together a line-up that offers exceptional artistry from other parts of the globe:

  • For the first time, the series will feature music from Egypt, Colombia and Algeria;

  • Two concerts will feature large music ensembles and dancers bringing to life the cultures of India and Guinea;

  • The diverse musical traditions of the Rom (Gypsies) in India, Turkey and the Balkans will be explored during the series; and

  • New York's Klezmatics return to See and Hear the World with Chava Alberstein, regarded as "The First Lady of Israeli Song."
Those wishing to subscribe to See and Hear the World may do so by purchasing tickets to five or more concerts in the series. Subscribers are invited to be their own artistic directors by choosing from amongst the nine concerts. Discounts of up to 15% are available to subscribers.
