Walker River

Walker River, Northeastern Bathurst Island, Nunavut, Canada

Description

Located about 1.5 km inland from the seacoast on northeastern Bathurst Island, Nunavut. Main structure - approx. 4 x 5 m plywood/2 x 4 frame - sleeps 6 (3 double bunks) in a pinch. Best suited for a maximum of 3 people over an extended period of time (weeks). Secondary structure - approx. 3 x 3 m plywood/2 x 4 frame - only good for storage and use as outhouse. Both structures heated by Coleman Space heaters. Drinking water from a small pond about 20 m from main structure (chip ice from pond surface during frozen period).

No other facilities available on site.

Land Use permit.

Scientific Research Permit - if applicable. Contact Nunavut Research Institute for advice.

June to August (Facility will only open on demand. Please call to confirm. No locks can be used as facility must be available in case of emergencies.)

Rules and regulations

Interested parties should contact Canadian Wildlife Service, Edmonton.

Subject to Land Use Permit. Please contact the Land Use Office to make arrangements for necessary approvals.

Normally not used by non-field party members.

Do not leave human waste within 1 km of camp site (bury beyond the 1 km limit).

No burning of garbage on site. Bag everything except human waste and take it out.

No cost.

Communications at facility

None - make own arrangements.

Access to facility

Twin Otter or smaller fixed-wing aircraft and helicopter. Snow machine in cold season and indirectly by boat during open water season.
