Facility

D'Iberville Fiord

D'Iberville Fiord, Ellesmere Island, Nunavut, Canada

Description

Facility includes three buildings which are wired to a diesel-powered generator. One building is for living quarters: it has a small kitchen, four bedrooms, living room, an office and can sleep 8-10 people. The second building is a garage that houses a caterpillar, complete with workbench and numerous tools. The third building is a storehouse, with abundant shelves, old food and old ice vehicles.

Availability

Late June to Early August (Although the facility is not officially open, it has been used by the Geological Survey of Canada and researchers supported by PCSP.)

Rules and regulations

Users must keep the site clean and leave tools and other instruments on site.

Cost to use facility

No charge at this time.

Communications at facility

Communication equipment is not available. However, arrangements can be made with Polar Continental Shelf Project to use their frequencies and schedule radio communication with their base in either/or Resolute/Eureka.

Access to facility

There is a fairly wide and long bulldozed gravel airstrip which is ideal for Twin Otters.

It is necessary to charter either fixed-wing aircraft or a helicopter to access facility.

Aircraft fuel available at Facility

The site is often used as a PCSP fuel cache; contact PCSP for use.

Vehicle fuel available at facility

Aucun carburant disponible.

Equipment available at facility

Old equipment, everything from cooking equipment, boat, trucks, handtools, sea-ice research tools, old snow machines: the site has been kept intact since the 1960s and must be left undisturbed.
