Polar Continental Shelf Project (PCSP), Eureka

Eureka, Ellesmere Island, Nunavut, Canada

Description

Main building is a Weatherhaven with kitchen and shower facilities, all heated by electric baseboards. It contains Logistics Manager's office and room, four small bedrooms and a recreation/TV room.

There is a trailer used as a maintenance shop by helicopter engineer, plus two smaller trailers used for storage.

Electricity supplied by a diesel generator; a few spare parts available.

Researchers interested in using the facility must contact Polar Continental Shelf Project at (613) 947-1650 to obtain the appropriate application forms and permissions.

Availability

Late May to Mid to late August (Contact Polar Continental Shelf Project well in advance as opening and closing dates vary from year to year.)

Rules and regulations

Supported field parties must report to Polar Continental Shelf Project (PCSP) by radio at least once per day.

Field parties must have a minimum of two persons.

All parties are responsible for arranging all appropriate permits, licences, approvals; contact PCSP for a complete list of regulations.

Cost to use facility

Price list is available upon request.

Communications at facility

HF Radio: working frequency 4472.5/camp use 4441.0

SBX 11 radios are provided to supported field parties.

Satellite phones can be made available with prior notice. However, they do not work all the time or in all areas due to mountains and high latitudes.

Emergency telephone service is available through either the military or Environment Canada.

Access to facility

Commercial flights to Resolute Bay; charter aircraft from Resolute to Eureka.

Aircraft fuel available at Facility

Not available.

Polar Shelf has its own fuel in Eureka.

Vehicle fuel available at facility

Equipment available at facility

A helicopter is usually stationed at the base in Eureka during the summer months and there are frequent Twin Otter flights into Eureka.

PCSP does not keep much equipment on hand in Eureka. If you contact PCSP well in advance, equipment can be made available from PCSP stores in Resolute Bay.

Please provide Polar Continental Shelf Project with your equipment request and staff will let you know what can be done to accommodate your needs.
