Whapmagoostui-Kuujjuarapik Research Station (Longitude, Latitude) : ( 77 46 W, 55 17 N ) Kuujjuarapik, Nunavik, Quebec, Canada
The station has been in operation since 1974 and consists of 5 buildings, including a dry lab, a wet lab, an experimental greenhouse, and a growing tunnel. Leisure areas include bedrooms, a lounge, and a cafeteria which can accomodate up to 25 people throughout the year. The station also includes a workshop and warehouses. A meteorological station operates year-round and is part of a network of 72 such stations which the Centre d'études nordiques (CEN) operates throughout Nunavik and Nunavut. The CEN offers logistical support to researchers working within a 350 km radius. Camping equipment, watercraft (rowboats and a Zodiac), motor vehicles (ATV's, snowmobiles, etc.) are available for the use of researchers. The CEN also rents out aircraft. The CEN's services are available to researchers from all walks, be it from the university, collegiate, government, or private sectors, whether they are working in the immediate region, or in transit to other northern locations. The CEN also welcomes groups of high-school, college, or university students studying in the North. The station can host small groups for scientific or pedagogical workshops whose goal is research or education. Together with the Université du Québec à Rimouski, the CEN owns three houses near Radisson, approximately 100 km to the south. These houses, which can accomodate up to 15 people, provide a logistical infrastructure for researchers working in the James Bay area and near the large hydro-electric dams.
The CEN keeps local indigenous leaders apprised of all arrangements with researchers. Contact Mr. Claude Tremblay to make arrangements.
