Canada and the Circumpolar World

The North is an essential part of Canada's identity and an area of growing importance internationally. Northerners, including Indigenous peoples comprising up to 80 percent of the population in some regions, have brought a number of emerging issues to the world's attention: the dangers and challenges posed by climate change; the need for sustainable economic development; and the importance of sharing experiences and knowledge with our circumpolar neighbours and the world. The Northern Dimension of Canada's Foreign Policy (NDFP) responds to these challenges in a manner that is both innovative and comprehensive.

The key priority areas for the NDFP are playing a leadership role in the Arctic Council to further Canadian priorities, engaging circumpolar countries on Canada's Northern policy priorities, strengthening the capacity of Northern organizations to participate in Circumpolar policy dialogue and cooperative activities, and increasing public support for Canada's role in building a vibrant circumpolar community.
