Scientists working in the Arctic are required to have a territorial scientific research licence. It is the responsibility of the researchers to ensure that they have all the necessary licences and permits. The documentation required will vary depending on the type of work you are conducting. The following agencies are responsible for issuing scientific research licences; they can advise you as to what documentation is required and can assist you in obtaining it. Note that the licensing process can be lengthy and you should apply at least three months before you plan to go into the field.

Other permits or licences you may need:

• an archaeology permit from the territorial culture department for Nunavut, the Northwest Territories, or the Yukon;
• a fisheries/marine science licence from the Department of Fisheries and Oceans;
• a national park research/collection permit and/or an aircraft landing permit from Parks Canada;
• a land use permit from the Department of Indian and Northern Affairs if your camp will be > 100 person-days;
• a wildlife capture permit and/or an export permit (for animal parts) from the territorial renewable resource department for Nunavut, the Northwest Territories, or the Yukon;
• a migratory bird sanctuary permit, a migratory bird scientific permit (if you are collecting, banding or disturbing birds), or a national wildlife area permit from the Canadian Wildlife Service;
• a Firearms Possession and Acquisition Licence from the Canadian Firearms Centre;
• a radio licence (if you will be using a radio not issued by PCSP or the Aurora Research Institute). Contact a regional office of Industry Canada's Spectrum Management and Telecommunications Branch;
• an environmental assessment from a municipal, territorial, or federal government;
• permits from local community organizations.
