HMCS MONCTON TO VISIT CORNER BROOK, N.L.Local residents and visitors to the city of Corner Brook, N.L., will have the opportunity to tour Her Majesty’s Canadian Ship (HMCS) Moncton next week prior to the ship’s participation in Search and Rescue (SAR) Exercise Ocean Guardian III. The Kingston-Class Maritime Coastal Defence Vessel (MCDV) is scheduled to arrive at the public wharf in Corner Brook at 9:00 a.m. on September 22, 2007.
Tours will be available on Monday, September 24, 2007 from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. Anyone wishing to tour HMCS Moncton will be required to present valid photo identification. Personal bags may not be permitted onboard.
SAR Exercise Ocean Guardian III, taking place on September 26 and 27, is a multi-jurisdictional search and rescue exercise with Federal maritime, aeronautical and ground SAR components as well as participants from Provincial and Municipal jurisdictions and authorities. The two-day scenario involves the evacuation of a passenger-carrying vessel on the West Coast of Newfoundland and Labrador during a distress scenario.
Moncton carries a crew of 41 Naval Reservists from across Canada, as well as two regular force sailors. These vessels are 55 meters long, 11 meters wide and are equipped with two 50-calibre machine guns and a 40mm gun. They are multi-role ships that can be fitted with inter-changeable modules supporting a wide variety of missions including general naval operations and exercises, as well as specialty work such as seabed mapping. When required, the vessels also provide support to the Halifax Joint Rescue Coordination Centre and law-enforcement agencies ranging from the RCMP, the Department of Fisheries and Oceans and the Canada Border Services Agency.
