BioChem

Welcome to the BioChem website

General Information

Never heard of BioChem? Come and find out why this huge biological and chemical initiative is so important and how it can help the scientific community in monitoring the global warming. Thousands of water samples are taken monthly and then put at the disposal of canadian scientists to improve the accuracy of the weather forecast and to broaden our knowledge of the oceans. As we speak, discrete and plankton data are the major sources of information gathered but this is likely to change in a near future for BioChem because the scientists want to take advantage of every drop of water they get out of the oceans to build the largest scientific data source ever. If you want to know more about the BioChem project, please click here.

System User Information

If you work on the BioChem project, this section may come in handy. It will give you access to all applications and scripts that help in performing data manipulation and quality control. You can also find documents and other sources of information such as user guides, polygon descriptions and much more. To access the private section, please click here.

How to get access to query BioChem Archives

Before you can run any queries, you must do three things:

1 - BioChem Query Registration

Register yourself and obtain a user name and password for the query application. You will be emailed with your user name/password. The BioChem application is available to anyone with a legitimate requirement for the information. This is a one-time registration.

Please include your name and affiliation in the email link below. The email address that you register from is the address which will be used for the query reply. If you want to run queries and receive results from this application at more than one location (i.e. at work and at home), you will need to register for each location.

If you wish to tell us how you are using the information, it will help us plan new products or applications. All information you provide is kept completely confidential.

Note: We've had a few reports of people not being able to use the email link below. If this happens to you, email us directly to datashop@mar.dfo-mpo.gc.ca . Use Registration Request for BioChem Database as the subject. Please also include in your note that you had to mail us directly so that we can learn more about this problem

3 - Download and Install Oracle Plug-in/Sun java Plug-in

Download and install an Oracle plug-in called JInitiator for your browser. This is available as a zip file. The application will recognize whether or not you have installed JInitiator and provide you with another opportunity. For users of IExplorer the download and install is automatic. If you have a relatively slow connection, it is preferable to download from the link below. You can at least see what is happening and feel you are making some progress. Be advised that the JInitiator download is quite large (10 Mb.) It is also fairly new technology. We will keep you informed via this page about updates as they become available.

Oracle JInitiator

Download and install the Sun JRE 1.4.2 needed to run the both of the Oracle Forms applications. Be advised that the Sun JRE download is quite large (12 MB). Be sure to activate this Java plug-in within Internet explorer. To do so, within IE click Tools, Internet Options and select the Advanced tab. Ensure that the Java Sun check box is checked then close IE explorer (mandatory).
