Stockshots
FAQ
Question Who can acquire NFB stock shots?
Answer The stock shots are for the exclusive use of film, advertising, television and new media professionals and are not available to the general public.
Question What can I find in the NFB Stock Shot Library?
Answer To learn more about the Stock Shot Library holdings, go to the Collection section.
Question Is there a printed catalogue?
Answer Since we are constantly adding to our holdings, it is not possible to keep a printed catalogue up to date. Our online catalogue lists over 28 000 shots on the most frequently requested subjects and is updated monthly.
Question How do I search the online catalogue?
Answer Just enter a key word for your subject. By choosing key words that are as specific as possible, you can narrow down your search.

Example:
Shots containing panoramas of the Rocky Mountains.

A search containing the key word Rockies will produce better results than a search using the key word mountains, which will return all descriptions containing the key word mountains, including the Rocky Mountains.

Another way of narrowing down your search is to use the Boolean operators AND, OR and NOT. Example:
Shots containing Notre-Dame Church in Montreal, filmed between 1945 and 1955.

Tip: Include accents where necessary and use parentheses () to search for a compound word.

Subject: (Notre-Dame)
And:
Subject: church
And
Geographic Location: Montreal
And
between year: 1945
and year: 1955

Once you have entered your key words, click the Search button. Your search results will be displayed in a new window.

If you do not find the stock shots you are seeking in our online catalogue or if you are not satisfied with your search results, you can send us a search request. Our research team will be pleased to conduct a more thorough search in the electronic database and card catalogue and fax you the descriptions of the desired shots.
