Warm Your Soul at the Wildcat Cafe!

Hull, Quebec, January 9, 2001 — On January 17, 2002, the Canadian Museum of Civilization invites you to come and enjoy a special evening featuring Robert Service’s poetry, read and sung in our replica of Yellowknife’s famous Wildcat Cafe.

Much of Robert Service’s work was inspired by his time in northern Canada. He set many of his poems in the Yukon and also visited the Northwest Territories. Tracey Brown (of The Family Brown fame) and Les McLaughlin, a former radio producer with CBC Northern Service, will perform some of Service’s poems set to music including The Cremation of Sam McGee, Goodbye Little Cabin and The Spell of the Yukon. Guests will also hear a very special archival recording from 1948, in which Robert Service himself recites The Grammyphone at Fond du Lac, a poem he wrote while travelling the Mackenzie River in 1912.

Brown was inducted into the Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame in 1997. Her father, the late legendary Papa Joe Brown, loved to recite the poems of Robert Service. The well-known Les McLaughlin grew up in the Yukon. In 1993, he was awarded the CBC’s prestigious President’s Award for his musical productions featuring Northern entertainers. He also has a CD called The Songs of Robert Service.

This special evening is also a unique opportunity to meet Tracy Riley, waitress and singer at the legendary Wildcat Cafe in Yellowknife. She will add to the authentic atmosphere by telling a few of her own stories of life at the Cafe and singing a few of her own songs

As part of this unusual experience, you will also sample food and drink that are sure to warm your soul. Enjoy a bowl of Caribou meatball stew and a complimentary drink (hot tea and a shot of “hooch”). Cash bar also available.

This special event is part of our Thursday-night series An Evening at the Museum, a cultural melange of talks, tours and tastings.
