The IMAX Theatre Has a Cure to Beat the Winter Blues

Hull, Quebec, January 6, 2002 — The IMAX Theatre has launched new releases in the spring, summer and fall for many years; but now, for the first time, it is launching an exciting new film in the dead of winter. As of January 12, 2002, visitors to the Canadian Museum of Civilization’s IMAX Theatre can embark on a virtual journey to visit the landscape and people who define Wild California. From the producers of Everest, Dolphins and Journey into Amazing Caves, the latest release from MacGillivray Freeman Films is a feel-good adventure that celebrates the diversity of scenery and culture that is California.

Presented on the IMAX screen, the film invites audiences to experience, firsthand, the excitement of aerial acrobatics high above the San Diego skyline; of snowboarding down extreme mountain terrain; of diving into the waves with renowned surfers; and of walking the red carpet at the Academy Awards®. With footage from the highest, wettest and most remote locations in the state, Wild California achieves a new level in IMAX filmmaking: not only does it bring viewers to the action, it makes them feel like participants themselves.

Celebrating California’s incredible landscapes and natural wonders, and their impact on human development in the American West, the film examines the link between location and inspiration. It follows the ingenuity and achievement inspired by the state’s wilderness areas: from skysurfers challenged to pursue extreme acrobatic feats, to botanists looking to uncover the mysteries of the giant sequoia forests; and from the ironworkers who maintain the Golden Gate Bridge, to the film industry whose creativity and growth have fuelled California’s incredible growth. While exploring the awe-inspiring wonders of the state, Wild California highlights the importance of conservation — both of the land and of the spirit it engenders.

With incredible scenery and action footage, and narration by Emmy award-winning actor Jimmy Smits (L.A. Law and N.Y.P.D. Blue), Wild California is more than a travelogue. The film is a heartfelt exploration of a land defined more by culture and landscape than by geographic or economic borders.

Also at the IMAX Theatre this winter, audiences will be able to continue their adventure — albeit in colder climes — with Shackleton’s Antarctic Adventure (also on the IMAX screen). Both films will be presented until March 2002.
