New Children’s Radio Station Launched as Part of the Rendez-vous de la Francophonie 2002

Chelsea (Quebec), March 15, 2002 - Young people will finally have their own radio station, CIRC-FM, even if it is just for 106 days. La Fondation Radio Enfant has obtained a temporary license from the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) to operate a 200-watt children’s radio station from March 18 to July 1, 2002. In the greater Ottawa-Gatineau region, you will be able to tune in on 96.5 FM.

Young people from more than 100 elementary and secondary schools across the country, including 47 in the greater Ottawa-Gatineau region, will take part in the Festival Radio Enfants-Ados as part of the Rendez-vous de la Francophonie 2002.

This year for the first time, the Canadian Museum of Civilization is an official partner of the Fondation Radio Enfant and will be offering young people an unforgettable broadcasting experience. The Museum will provide space for a complete radio studio and a variety of equipment, free of charge, to schools and the Foundation.

With programming by and for young people, CIRC-FM plans to go on air Wednesday, March 20. In celebration of the Journée internationale de la Francophonie that day, you will be able to hear programming devoted entirely to La Francophonie in Canada and internationally, with young Franco-Ontarians broadcasting from a studio in the Canadian Museum of Civilization. A team of young reporters will cover the official ceremony marking this special day.

Programming
Throughout the 106 days, programming will focus on francophone music enjoyed by young people from ages 5 to 18, which is rarely heard on regular radio stations. Across the rest of the country, you will be able to hear CIRC-FM on the Internet ( http://www.radioenfant.ca ) thanks to the services of Canarie and on community radio stations.

Be sure to tune in every day, as the young broadcasters have a number of surprises lined up. On May 6 and 7, for example, CIRC-FM moves to New York! Teams of young people will be broadcasting directly from the World Youth Forum in New York, organized by the UN in conjunction with their Special Session on Children.

On CIRC-FM, you will also be able to hear children from Petit Rocher (N.B.), Chéticamp (N.S.), St. John’s (Nfld.) and Abraham-Village (P.E.I.), as well as a number of schools in the Montréal region and in other parts of Quebec. Even young people from other countries in La Francophonie will be able to participate in Radio Enfants-Ados this year via the French educational channel (AIF), which broadcasts in French-speaking Africa, Belgium and other francophone countries.

In June, the Ottawa boy scouts will take over the air waves for a day of radio in the open air.

Tune in on June 21 and 22 to hear First Nations Day celebrations. Some of the programming will be coming from Attikamek and Montagnais bands on Quebec’s North Shore.

The Fondation Radio Enfant would like to acknowledge the contribution of the Rendez-vous de la Francophonie to bringing about this project. We are also grateful for the participation of the Alliance des radios communautaires du Canada (ARC) in this adventure. ARC has made broadcasting equipment available to CIRC-FM and provided access to some of their affiliated stations.

Thanks to the contribution of Montreal’s Archambault music store, our young broadcasters will be able to choose songs from an impressive collection of children’s recordings.

The Fondation would also like to thank the City of Gatineau, the Conseil Local de Développement des Collines and the McConnell Foundation for their support.
