Board Seeks Refinement to New Canadian War Museum Designs

Ottawa, Ontario, May 26, 2002 — The Board of Trustees of the Canadian Museum of Civilization Corporation met this weekend to consider the three designs for the new Canadian War Museum (CWM) as submitted by the architectural consortium of Moriyama and Teshima of Toronto and Griffiths Rankin Cook of Ottawa.

The Board carefully examined comments and feedback from a variety of organizations and individuals. These included the CWM Advisory Council, the CWM Committee of the Board of Trustees, and the National Capital Commission. A report from the web-based consultation with Canadians was also provided.

The Board concluded that a final decision cannot yet be made and has asked the architects to refine some of the ideas in the three designs and to respond quickly.

“The Board understands the need for a decision as soon as possible”, stated Dr. John English, Chairman of the CMCC Board of Trustees. “However, given the significance of this project to all Canadians and to future generations, we want to ensure that this major new facility is one of which we as a nation can be truly proud, and which preserves our military history in the best possible way. We are still planning to open on schedule in 2005.”
