Minister of Justice to Launch the 20th Anniversary Photographic Exhibit of The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms
GATINEAU, June 11, 2002 - The Honourable Martin Cauchon, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, officiated at today’s launch of a photographic exhibit marking the 20th anniversary of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms at the Canadian Museum of Civilization in Gatineau.
“It is with great pleasure that I take this opportunity to mark the 20th anniversary of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
“The Charter photographic exhibit gives us an opportunity to pause for a moment from our busy lives and reflect on what the Charter has come to mean, as an idea that defines us as Canadians.
“Since its inception in 1982, the Charter has become a symbol of the values we hold dear and of what we wish to achieve as a people. Today, more than ever, the Charter is a source of pride to Canadians. It reflects who we are. It celebrates our diversity,” concluded Minister Cauchon.
The collection of more than 50 photographs, primarily drawn from the collection of Jean-Marc Carisse, which had been donated to the National Archives, captures images of the people and events surrounding the Charter’s development from Prime Minister Trudeau’s Speech from the Throne on April 14, 1980 to the Charter’s proclamation ceremony on Parliament Hill, two years later.
The Canadian Museum of Civilization is pleased to host the exhibition, entitled The Charter. It’s Us. It’s Ours. The creation of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms was a significant milestone in Canadian history. Visitors will find it an interesting and relevant addition to the popular Canada Hall in our national museum of human history.
The exhibit will be open to the public at the Museum until November 30, 2002.
