India Through the Eyes of the Tiger!

Gatineau, June 20, 2002 – On July 1, the Canadian Museum of Civilization’s IMAX® Theatre opens its doors to the colourful land of India and to its endangered predator — the mighty Bengal tiger — in the Canadian Premiere of India — Kingdom of the Tiger. Audiences will travel through time with Jim Corbett: world-acclaimed hunter, writer, wildlife conservationist, and one of the most beloved figures in Indian history.

Inspired by one of Jim Corbett’s books The Man-Eater of Mukteshwar, India – Kingdom of the Tiger features the story of a village in the Kumaon Mountains, which is being terrorized by a rogue tigress. After receiving a telegram from the villagers, Jim Corbett reluctantly agrees to travel to Mukteshwar in order to save villagers from the man-eating beast.

Following this dramatic tale, woven from Corbett’s biography, audiences are led across one of history’s most diverse cultural and social landscapes. And as they plunge into the mysterious world of the Bengal tiger, viewers are treated to rare footage of wild tigers in their natural habitat, showcasing the agility and grace of this majestic creature.

Back to the twenty-first-century India, life in the crowded streets of Delhi, Calcutta and Bombay and the banks of the holy Ganges in Varanasi, is vibrant, various, and colourful. Juxtaposing such visuals as a street corner crowded with bicycle rickshaws, and a wedding procession in the desert, the film captures the dramatic and often contrasting facets of Indian culture.

Also at the IMAX Theatre this summer, the IMAX camera delves inside our bodies in The Human Body (presented on the IMAX Dome). Also featured are Great North (presented on the IMAX screen) and Dolphins (presented on the IMAX Dome). All four films will run through September 3, 2002.
