Is the Crown at War with Us?
National Capital premiere at the Canadian Museum of Civilization

Gatineau, Quebec, October 23, 2002 — Join the Government Film Commissioner and Chairperson of the National Film Board of Canada, Jacques Bensimon, for the premiere of Alanis Obomsawin’s newest documentary Is the Crown at War with Us? at the Canadian Museum of Civilization on November 2, 2002.

One of Canada’s most acclaimed documentary filmmakers, Alanis Obomsawin focuses her camera on the events of the summer of 2000 and the dramatic conflict between Mi’gmag fishermen and fisheries’ officers.

Casting her own cinematic and intellectual nets into recent history, Obomsawin provides a context for the extraordinary events on Miramichi Bay and introduces us to the key local and national players. Tracing the complex roots of the present-day conflict, she builds a persuasive defence of the Mi’gmaq position and offers a gripping portrait of a community under siege.

Obomsawin has dedicated her career to documenting the history and culture of Canada’s First Peoples. In Is the Crown at War with Us?, she observes the conflict at Esgenoôpetitj (Burnt Church, N.B.) with passion and clarity, providing a powerful document of the troubled summer and invaluable insight into the complex relationship between Canada and its First Nations.

Alanis Obomsawin, a member of the Abenaki Nation, is one of Canada’s most distinguished documentary filmmakers, with over 20 uncompromising films on issues concerning Canada’s First Peoples. Obomsawin’s films have won dozens of major international awards and have been seen on television and at festivals around the world.
