Mexico: Colours of a Country and Testimonies of a Life

Gatineau, Quebec, December 20, 2002 — The Canadian Museum of Civilization is pleased to present a glimpse at Mexican philately and history in memory of philatelist Francisco Espinosa (1934–2002), whose private stamp collection is displayed in this little gem of an exhibition.

Visitors to the exhibition, prepared by his son Fernando, will be able to share Francisco Espinosa’s passion for stamps and philately. Both father and son began collecting early in life. After his father passed away, Fernando, whose childhood interest in philately helped to inspire his impressive career in the Foreign Service, decided to organize his father’s stamps in order to better appreciate the man behind the collection. What he discovered is a unique collection assembled by an accomplished and passionate philatelist, a collection that captures the beauty and the essence of Mexico throughout its changing history.

Francisco Espinosa assembled one of the finest chronicles of Mexican philatelic history. All four periods of Mexico’s postal history (classical, ancient, revolutionary and modern) are represented in this exhibition, with several items from the Mexico Exporta (Mexican exports) issue, Francisco’s main interest for many years. You will be intrigued by many of the subjects illustrated on the stamps, including Mexico’s former leaders and historical events, its famous sites and its endangered species. The virtuosity of the stamp designers will also catch your eye – especially in the 1968 Olympic Games issue, the souvenir sheets on Communications and the stamps commemorating the 75th anniversary of the Mexican Baseball League.

The Espinosa exhibition, entitled Mexico: Colours of a Country and Testimonies of a Life, will be on display at the Canadian Postal Museum of the Canadian Museum of Civilization until June 8, 2003.
