The Multinational Andean Project: Geoscience for Andean Communities (MAP:GAC) is a technology transfer project that is enhancing the quality of life for people of the Andes. Funded by the Canadian International Development Agency and managed by Natural Resources Canada, this project is providing updated and integrated information on natural hazards in the Andean regions of Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Perú, and Venezuela.

Natural hazards form part of the complex mixture of natural, social, and political factors that influence the location and type of investment. Primarily aimed at reducing the negative impacts of disruptions caused by volcanic activity, earthquakes, and landslides on Andean communities, the underlying objective of MAP:GAC is to technologically advance the Andean nations involved so that they will be better able to provide updated and integrated geoscience and geospatial information for:

dGPS work - Loja, Ecuador

  • land use planning;
  • economic investment optimization;
  • assisting with the safe siting of infrastructure;
  • mitigating the impacts of natural geological hazards by communicating information usable to emergency planners, land use planners, and governments; and
  • emergency management.

To date, MAP:GAC has achieved success in:

  • enhancing the abilities of the national geoscience agencies to collect and interpret geohazard and geospatial information;
  • enhancing institutional cooperation and knowledge for the dissemination of geohazard and geospatial information to decision makers and targeted communities;
  • integrating, translating and sharing multivariant information and knowledge assets (geospatial and news media) in a distributed network environment; and
  • promoting international cooperation through collaboration on geoscience initiatives.
