Marine

Transport Canada provides a wide range of
marine safety services to promote safe shipping in
waters off Atlantic Canada. Transport Canada’s Office of
Boating Safety promotes safe boating for recreational boaters.

Preventing marine pollution and reducing the impact of shipping on the Atlantic Region’s marine environment is a major priority. The department

works with the industry and the public to promote safe marine practices and environmentally friendly operations. For example, Transport Canada has adopted measures to protect the endangered North Atlantic Right Whales from collisions with tankers in the Roseway Basin in Nova Scotia.

Transport Canada owns and operates a number of ports in the Atlantic Region. Transport Canada is responsible for the implementation of port security requirements at all ports in Atlantic Canada.

The Navigable Waters Protection Program ensures a balance between the public right of navigation and the need to build works such as bridges, dams or docks for example, in navigable waters.
