The economic development of Atlantic Canada relies greatly on the efficiency of its transportation system. Its unique geography and settlement patterns present a number of challenges to transportation providers and regulators. Much of the economic activity in this region still revolves around natural resource-based industries, which impacts on where people settle. The result is relatively few larger urban centers and a large number of small rural communities.

Transport Canada works with stakeholders to improve the efficiency and sustainability of the region’s transportation system. In recent years there has been a growing effort to optimize the efficiency of the system by encouraging cooperation among the various modes of transportation, thereby reducing congestion and greenhouse gas emissions.
