Overview

The Navigation Safety and Radiocommunications division is responsible for promoting and enhancing safety of navigation and radiocommunications for the protection of life, property and the marine environment through the development, implementation and maintenance of policies, regulations, standards, procedures and other safety initiatives.  The division's activities cover the complete spectrum of vessels, including fishing vessels, recreational craft, cargo ships and passenger ships.

The division also develops and administers regulations under the Canada Shipping Act, 2001 and the Arctic Waters Pollution Prevention Act relating to navigation safety and radiocommunications.

Canadian stakeholders are provided an opportunity to comment and influence key international and national initiatives through the Standing Committee on Navigation and Operation of the Canadian Marine Advisory Council. This national Standing Committee is chaired by NSRC and meets twice per year.
