Collaborative Research

FAQs
:: What kind of projects could qualify?
:: How does NRC-IIT define “research”?
:: Will NRC-IIT provide funding?

Experience shows collaborations work.

Collaborative R&D projects can be a very cost-effective route for developing market-driven technology solutions. Collaborations can be one-on-one or can be multi-party with several organizations pooling resources to share costs and risks.

The place to start: a good fit.

Opportunities for collaborative research between the NRC Institute for Information Technology (NRC-IIT) and industry partners exist wherever there are common technical objectives or where the unique expertise of the Institute provides a good match to industrial requirements.

Collaborations are subject to the availability of resources, which vary from group to group and from time to time.

Collaborations are mutually beneficial.

Typically, all partners contribute to the funding of a project. Partner funds are generally eligible for federal tax credits. Partners may also look to the award-winning Industrial Research Assistance Program (NRC-IRAP) for financial assistance.

Intellectual Property (IP) resulting from collaboration is protected, through mechanisms such as patents or trade secrets. The IP is made available to partners under licensing agreements, through which the Institute sees a return on its research investment.

Agreements are easy to reach.

A good working relationship requires project participants to share an understanding of the project's goals and scope and of each partner's role and responsibilities. To ensure this common understanding, a project agreement is negotiated and signed in each case. The structure of collaborative agreements with NRC is customized in each instance to match partners’needs.
