Dedicated to providing laboratory and office space for commercial activity, the NINT Innovation Centre serves technology startups and established companies that would benefit from locating close to NINT and University of Alberta facilities and expertise.

Where is the NINT Innovation Centre?

The NINT Innovation Centre (NIC) occupies the fourth floor of the NINT Building at 1142 Saskatchewan Drive, Edmonton, Alberta on the campus of the University of Alberta. NIC has 2700 m² (29,000 ft2) of laboratory and office space which is rented out at commercial rates. The Innovation Centre revolving door policy allows 15 companies at a time to occupy space and collaborate with researchers in "Canada's flagship nanotechnology institute."

How can the NINT Innovation Centre help?

NIC offers services in three main areas:

  • providing laboratory and office space;
  • arranging for access to NINT and University of Alberta expertise, through materials characterization services, facilities access, contract research, and strategic research collaborations;
  • for technology entrepreneurs, linking to services designed to assist technology entrepreneurs in business planning, financing and strategy.

What is available in the NINT Innovation Centre?

  1. NIC features 13 suites of approximately 90 m² (1020 ft2 ) each, divided into 1/3 office, 2/3 lab space (each suite is rented as one unit).
  2. Labs are fully serviced with fume hood infrastructure, demineralized water, and natural gas, vacuum, dry nitrogen and oxygen lines.
  3. Two bays of approximately 72 m² (820 ft2 ) each, designed for computing labs.
  4. Three meeting rooms, lunch facilities, locked mailboxes, and shipping & receiving services all on the same secured floor.
  5. Access to a seminar theatre with video conferencing and multimedia presentation capabilities.
  6. Twenty-four hour a day, seven day a week security with CCTV monitoring.
  7. Rates are set in conjunction with TEC Edmonton and Edmonton Economic Development Corporation to be in line with other local incubation facilities.

What can I expect at NINT?

Start-up companies will have access to $45 million in advanced analytical and fabrication equipment, flexible lab and office space, and professionals who are committed to finding solutions that will ensure success in the emerging field of nanotechnology. Such contract research and facilities access opportunities and the proximity to such expertise make the NINT Innovation Centre more than just a lease of space.

Opportunities for collaborative research projects with NINT and University of Alberta researchers or other tenants are possible. NINT's Business Development Office will assist any interested parties in establishing mutual research or commercialization ventures.
