Building the AMTCThe NRC Institute for Aerospace Research (NRC-IAR) received authorization from Treasury Board in July 2001 to proceed with construction of the Aerospace Manufacturing Technology Centre (AMTC). The funding envelope was $46.5 million, co-financed by NRC ($21.5 million) and Canada Economic Development ($25 million). A site on the Université de Montréal campus was selected for the new building. The design of the building was completed in late 2001 and a contract was issued for its construction in mid 2002. Construction began in September 2002 and was essentially completed in January 2004. During the construction phase, space for temporary offices and laboratory space was rented in Montréal to accommodate new staff members and the manufacturing equipment being procured to support the research program. Staff and equipment were moved into the new building in May 2004, following safety inspections and completion of minor refitting work. The Centre is now officially open. The 65,000 square-foot building can accommodate approximately 100 people (including staff and guest workers for industry and universities). To date, 39 staff members have been hired and close to $12 million dollars has been invested in equipment. Street address: Postal address: Photo Gallery
