Air Moving and Heating Capablities

Compressors CMP1 and CMP2
Compressors CMP1 and CMP2

The Gas Turbine Laboratory of the NRC Institute for Aerospace Research (NRC Aerospace) operates several labs that are used by clients and collaborators to help develop the next generation of combustion technologies. These facilities are supplied by a broad spectrum of air moving machines that deliver heated air via common piping manifolds. The following tables outline the Laboratory's air moving and heating capabilities.

 Air Moving Facilities Air Flow
(lbs/s)
Pressure
(psia)
 CMP1 7 315
 CMP2 315
 CMP3 32.5 315
 M5A 1 Compressor 5 300
 M5A 2 Compressors 10 300
 2 MW Brown Boveri  10 2
 5 MW Brown Boveri 27 105

 Air Moving Facilities Air Flow
(lbs/s)

Temperature
(°F)
 Air Heater M10-B 10 315 1200
 Air Heater M10-F 10 315 1200
 Air Heater M10-F 20 315 1200

CMPs 1 through 3 are new, integrally geared compressors that can be operated either individually or in parallel to yield a total combined output of 46.5 lb/s. The M5A compressors can be run individually or in parallel and, if necessary ganged with the three CMPs to give a combined mass flow of 56.5 lb/s. This air can be used by any of the five test cells operated by the Gas Turbine Laboratory.

The air heaters are integrated to service only their respective buildings. They can accommodate larger flow rates that those listed above; however, the maximum delivery temperature will decrease.

The Brown Boveri (BB) exhausters service the internal aerodynamics facilities.
