Fixed-Wing Aerodynamics

The NRC Institute for Aerospace Research (NRC Aerospace) conducts experimental and analytical aerodynamic investigations for the aircraft industry and government departments.

The main focus is in the areas of flight safety and controllability. Specifically, areas of advanced research are:

  • effects of icing on aircraft performance
  • the aerodynamic simulation of unsteady phenomena associated with aircraft stalling
  • aircraft take-off maneuvers
  • the aerodynamics of combat aircraft and missiles
  • stores clearance and release tests
  • Unmanned Aerial Vehicle investigations, and
  • low Reynolds Number flows associated with Micro Aerial Vehicles.

The approaches used emphasize synergistic use of experimental, numerical and analytical methods supported by four wind tunnels and state-of-the-art instrumentation.
