Civilization.ca Web Site Wins International Award

Gatineau, Quebec, December 4, 2002 — A major international audio-visual award was given to the Canadian Museum of Civilization Corporation (CMCC) at a ceremony held last week in São Paulo, Brazil. The CMCC's Civilization.ca Web site was recognized as one of the best museum Web sites in the world today.

The award was presented by AVICOM, the International Committee for the Audiovisual and Image and Sound New Technologies. Competing against strong contenders from all over the world, the CMCC site took the Web'Art silver award (Web site category) in AVICOM's annual competition for audiovisual and multimedia production.

"Not only is this award a great honour, but it suggests how effective our site is in communicating Canadian historical and social information worldwide," said Dr. Victor Rabinovitch, President and CEO of the CMCC. "Civilization.ca is accessible and stimulating for a wide range of users. It allows the Museum to disseminate original research and contribute to global scholarship and knowledge. This rich site is an encyclopedic resource for online visitors."

The awards ceremony was part of AVICOM's yearly Festival Audiovisuel International Musées et Patrimoine. The international competition is held annually to encourage and promote the development of audiovisual and multimedia products by public- or private-sector organizations working in the field of cultural heritage interpretation. Civilization.ca was chosen by an international jury of judges from among 37 Web sites and virtual exhibitions, including seven Canadian competitors.

The award was accepted on behalf of the CMCC by its Chief Information Technology Officer, Gordon Butler. "I am proud to accept this award on behalf of the Corporation," said Mr. Butler. "The Civilization.ca site recently underwent a major redesign, which we unveiled in September 2001. We have one of the most extensive museum Web sites in the world, and our aim in redesigning the site was to improve its visual appearance, make it easier for visitors to navigate, and introduce new virtual exhibitions, games and other features. For us, this award is welcome recognition of that effort."

AVICOM is the audiovisual arm of the International Council of Museums (ICOM), a non-governmental organization associated with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). It administers the museum programme under UNESCO. ICOM has 17,000 members in 140 countries, with 28 international committees operating under its auspices.
