A picture is worth a thousand words... Every picture has its own unique story... Don't tell me – show me!"
In spite of the world's love affair with words, both written and spoken, there is no arguing that one of the best means of both communicating, of overcoming the limitations of language, and of better understanding the world around us is through pictures.
"I am among those who think that science has great beauty. A scientist in his laboratory is not only a technician: he is also a child placed before natural phenomena which impress him like a fairy tale." Marie Curie (1867 – 1934)
Photography, television, movies, video... all combine to produce a continuous stream of images that inform and clarify, that become icons and symbols of our history and our progress, and that pique our curiosity and drive us to discover more about the world, the universe and beyond.
Images are vital tools in science and engineering research and development. They provide an important means of communicating, of increasing understanding and of helping educate and inform us about scientific breakthroughs and discoveries that affect our daily lives and livelihoods.
It is for these reasons that NRC has created a new online data base of science images: NRC-Picture Perfect Science.
This interactive, on-line resource provides users with some 100 images of NRC science and engineering research, covering diverse fields ranging from life sciences and biotechnology through to engineering, construction and environmental technologies – images of NRC's science at work for Canada.

Each of the photos is indexed according different fields of research and is accompanied by a short, informative caption that explains the research symbolized in the image and its importance to us all. The database will be expanded continuously in the months ahead as NRC's research leads to new discoveries and new applications.
We hope you enjoy this new addition to NRC's Internet presence and invite your feedback! |
