Growing Bacteria for Vaccines
NRC scientists have developed a unique Trojan Horse technique for delivering vaccines. The technique requires large amounts of fat produced by a bacterium. Here an NRC researcher withdraws a sample of the anaerobic bacteria through the rubber seal (not shown) of a one-litre culture bottle using a disposable syringe. Eventually some of this bacteria will be used to grow the large number of bacterial cells required for harvesting the fat. The fat is used to produce a nano-sized balloon, an archaeosome, that can carry antigens directly into human immune cells, triggering a protective immune response. |
