Institute for National Measurement Standards

Mass Standards

The Mass Standards Program establishes and improves traceability of mass and the derived units of pressure, density and gas flow to the Canadian prototype of the kilogram, K74. K74 and its witness, K50, are copies of the platinum iridium International Prototype Kilogram held by the Bureau international des Poids et Mesures (BIPM).

Comprehensive calibration services are available to clients in industries such as mining and forestry, engine and pharmaceutical manufacturing, shipbuilding and aviation. Engineering firms, calibration laboratories and universities interact with the group for measurement services, technical assessment and advice.

Through its calibration, documentation activities and, most importantly, the provision of measurement experts for accreditation, the program supports the Institute's Calibration Laboratory Assessment Service (CLAS).
