Electrical Standards - Calibration Services

Ordering Calibrations Services

The Electrical Standards Group develops and maintains Canada's national standards of electrical measurement and disseminates the corresponding electrical units throughout Canada. The Group provides technical support to the Canadian Laboratory Assessment Service (CLAS) in the area of electrical standards and participates with other national and international organizations in activities related to electrical standards.

Contact: INMS Electrical Standards Clients

The calibration services of the Group cover:

  • DC resistance from 10 µΩto 100 TΩ
  • DC voltage from 100 µV to 100 kV
  • AC voltage (ac-dc difference) from 0.002 V to 1000 V and 10 Hz to 1 MHz*
  • AC resistance (ac-dc difference) from 2 mA to 100 A and 10 Hz to 100 kHz*
  • AC capacitance from 0.001pF to 1 µF at 1 kHz
  • AC inductance from 1 µH to 10 H at 1 kHz

  • RF impedance (Z/Zo) from 0.5 to 2.0 from 250 MHz to 18 GHz
  • RF attenuation to 60 dB at frequencies from 1 MHz to 36 GHz
  • RF power from 1 µW to 10 mW from 1 MHz to 40 GHz
    *not all combinations are available

A number of other measurements can be performed by special arrangement.

The Electrical Standards Group usually begins calibrations only in April, May, June, October, November, and December. Calibrations may begin in other months, but only by special arrangement. To assure minimum calibration delays, please consult with the Group before sending calibration equipment to NRC. Measurements are normally performed at room temperature, typically 20°C to 23°C, and approximately 40% relative humidity, unless otherwise specified.

Standard cells normally require from one to three weeks to stabilize under laboratory conditions of constant temperature followed by a period of about two weeks for calibration. The calibration report will quote the mean value of the electromotive force (emf) observed during this latter period, in terms of the unit of emf maintained by NRC, and will provide an indication of the variations observed. If appreciable, the change observed during the initial stabilizing period will also be reported.
