Filing a Complaint?

Please note that the Office of the Privacy Commissioner cannot accept complaints through this blog.

How to Access your Personal Information and Lodge Complaints

In Canada your privacy rights are protected by two pieces of federal legislation.

Contact our Office if you feel that an organization subject to federal privacy laws has violated your privacy rights. Lodging a complaint with our Office is free of charge and we are here to assist you throughout the process. There is no need to hire special advisors to help you lodge a complaint with our Office.

Using the Privacy Act

Have you tried using the Privacy Act to see your personal information and run into problems? Do you think the federal government is mishandling or collecting too much personal information?

Using the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act

Do you think that an organization in the private sector is mishandling your personal information? Would you like to see what information an organization in the federally regulated private sector has about you?

Info Source and the Privacy Act

Info Source is a public directory that can help you figure out which federal government agency has personal information about you, and who you must contact to get it.

If you have a formal complaint of the handling of your personal information by a federal government institution or a business, please write to us at:
