Jeffrey M. Thomas is a noted photographic artist with seven solo exhibitions
and more than twenty group exhibitions to his credit. To date, Mr. Thomas
has also been curator of three photographic exhibitions: Aboriginal
Portraits from The National Archives of Canada (Ottawa, 1997),
Pride and Dignity (Ottawa, 1998) and the current Emergence
from the Shadow at the CMC (Hull, 1999). His work and artistic vision were also
the subject of the film Shooting Indians: A Journey with Jeffrey Thomas,
which was presented at the 1997 Toronto International Film Festival.
Self-taught in the photographic arts, Mr. Thomas was born in Buffalo,
New York in 1956 and is a member of the Onondaga tribe of Six Nations,
Ontario. He is considered one of the most notable Aboriginal photographers
of his time, and his work can be found in the collections of the Canadian
Museum of Civilization, the National Archives of Canada, the Canada Council
Art Bank, Princeton University, the Southern Plains Indian Museum of Oklahoma
and many other public and private collections throughout Canada and
the United States.
