The Painted Furniture of French Canada 1700-1840
From: May 29, 1997 To: March 15, 1998 |
The study of furniture is a form of above-ground archaeology, a neglected way of documenting cultural and social history, a particular time and place. This exhibition of about 85 objects from private and public collections explores the meaning of artifacts, their social function and hidden values through an examination of the painted furniture of French Canada and the relationship between human activities, the making of objects and the physical space in which we live.
