Harry Potter in IMAX at the 2006 CBC IMAX Film Festival

February 13, 2006 – Gatineau, Quebec — The 2006 CBC IMAX Film Festival will be held at the Canadian Museum of Civilization's IMAX Theatre from February 25 to March 31. This popular event is certain to stir the emotions and excite the senses of viewers across the region with its line-up of eight great films.

First IMAX feature-length film in the region

To enhance the IMAX experience, a new module was added to the projection system. The Quick Turn Reel Unit (QTRU) reduces the time needed to change films and reduces the risk of running late, especially when showing films more than 50 minutes in length. The QTRU also allows for the presentation of feature-length films of up to 2-1/2 hours. The Festival is a great opportunity to introduce the first IMAX-format feature film in the National Capital Region: Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire*. A great way to enjoy the magic of IMAX !

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire was selected as the first digitally remastered IMAX (DMR) film to be shown in the National Capital Region. The choice was easy, given that the IMAX Theatre at the Canadian Museum of Civilization has received hundreds of e-mails and phone calls requesting the film since its launch in regular theatres last November. DMR films are introduced on a trial basis, and will be monitored to see how viewers and IMAX Club members react to this type of programming. Like most feature-length IMAX films, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire was not filmed with IMAX cameras but was digitally remastered to the IMAX 70mm format. In the end, viewers get seven-storey-high images of unique quality, combined with 12,000 watts of sound!

Three new releases . . .

In addition to Kilimanjaro: To the Roof of Africa and Magnificent Desolation: Walking on the Moon, both playing on the IMAX Dome, the Festival presents three new releases. Traditional IMAX film fans will not be disappointed with the Festival's 7th edition as they enjoy Mystic India, Galapagos and Bugs.

. . . and two classics

The IMAX Theatre will also be bringing back two of its most popular large-format features: Stormchasers and Africa: The Serengeti.
