Discover Algonquin Basketry Techniques at the Canadian Museum of CivilizationGatineau, Quebec, July 31, 2006 — On August 8 and 9 at the Canadian Museum of Civilization, join Algonquin artist Catherine Cayer for a demonstration of traditional basketry techniques. Cayer will demonstrate how to weave ashwood and assemble birchbark baskets, as she explains the tools of her craft.
Catherine Cayer is a member of the Kitigan Zibi Anishinabe Cultural Centre in Maniwaki, Quebec, and has been crafting baskets and leading workshops for over 20 years. All participants will have an opportunity to use their new knowledge by creating a small sweetgrass broom.
