Canadian War Museum Launches Building Knowledge, a New Public Programming Series

Ottawa, Ontario, September 25, 2006 — The Canadian War Museum (CWM) today launched Building Knowledge, a series of public programs for people who want to increase their knowledge of Canada's rich military history in new, interesting and engaging formats.

Joe Geurts, Director and CEO of the CWM stated: "In order to help visitors gain a better understanding of Canada's military history in all of its dimensions, our staff have devised engaging new programs designed as much for novices as for veteran researchers in the field of military history. It is another way for us to continue building upon our reputation as a venue for the informed discussion of military affairs, past and present."

Building Knowledge consists of four different types of programs: CWM Book Club, Lifelong Learners, Speakers and Walk & Talk tours.

CWM Book Club: An opportunity to spend an intimate and informal evening discussing recent books on Canadian military history with the authors themselves. Admission fee includes wine and cheese.

Lifelong Learners: Participants in this daylong program will have an opportunity to spend time with CWM experts for an in-depth look at special exhibitions. A light lunch is included in the admission fee.

Speakers: From artists and writers, to scholars and experts, national and international speakers will present their interpretation, personal expression, or in-depth research on topics related to military history. Most speakers are featured once a month on Thursday evenings.

Walk & Talk Tours: The Museum will also continue offering its popular Walk & Talk tours, providing visitors with an opportunity to tour special exhibitions with experts. These tours are scheduled on the last Sunday of every month.

Lisa Leblanc, Manager of Programs and Interpretation, said: "Our family programming has been a great success, but we wanted to provide interested visitors with a wide range of options for exploring Canada's military history. Building Knowledge is a way for us to meet the interests of our regular visitors, while helping others to discover the Museum and its dynamic and exciting programs."

The CWM also offers public programs designed for families, programs associated with special exhibitions, a full range of activities for all ages, as well as a full series of school programs which meet both Ontario and Quebec curricula.

The Canadian War Museum is open seven days a week from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Thursdays until 9 p.m. Admission is free on Thursday evenings from 4 p.m. until closing. Additional information is available by calling 819 776-8600 or 1 800 555-5621.
