Holiday Programming at the Canadian War MuseumOttawa, Ontario, December 21, 2006 — The Canadian War Museum is pleased to announce its special programming for the holidays. Covering some 5,000 years of history, the Canadian War Museum is Canada's national museum of military history, presenting the personal, national and international dimensions of these times while showing visitors how Canada has been shaped by its participation in various wars and conflicts throughout the ages.
NEW EXHIBITION: Canada Under Attack: The Battle of the St. Lawrence (1942–1944) During the Second World War, German submarines sank Canadian and Allied ships in the River and Gulf of St. Lawrence. For two years, a fierce naval battle raged on the doorstep of Canada's coastal communities. Canada Under Attack tells the story of this struggle, the Battle of the St. Lawrence.
Faced with the constant threat of German torpedoes and spies, residents of the St. Lawrence and Gaspé areas learned how to cope with military preparations, blackout procedures and coastal defence. Explore the wreckage of ships and torpedoes collected by local residents, and discover the personal stories of Canadians who experienced war close to home.
A travelling exhibition jointly created by the Naval Museum of Québec and the Musée de la Gaspésie.
All activities are scheduled from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
