Look for ENERGY STAR® Features

(292 words)

The ENERGY STAR symbol has come to the world of windows and sliding glass doors. Homeowners can now look for the familiar symbol to ensure that they are purchasing products whose certified thermal performance will save them energy and money and reduce greenhouse gas emissions that are contributing to climate change.

Windows and sliding glass doors were only added to the list of products that are eligible for ENERGY STAR in April 2004, so it may not be easy to find qualified products in your area. In the absence of an ENERGY STAR symbol, make sure any window or sliding glass door you purchase has these energy-efficient features:

  • double- or triple-glazing, with a sealed insulating glass unit
  • low emissivity or “low-e” glass
  • an inert gas, such as argon or krypton, in the sealed unit
  • low conductivity or “warm edge” spacer bars
  • insulated frames and sashes

As well, arrange for the product to be professionally installed. Poor installation can completely offset any benefits you might expect from an energy-efficient window or sliding glass door, and could even end up costing you money in the long run.

Look for the ENERGY STAR symbol to identify the most energy-efficient products.
