Gas Fireplaces: Energy-Efficient Ambiance

(284 words)

Gone are the days when large wood-burning fireplaces were a primary source of heat in most Canadian homes. Yet fireplaces continue to hold a special place in the hearts of Canadians for the ambiance and warmth they can provide on chilly winter evenings.

Like many other household technologies, fireplace designs have evolved dramatically over the years. Perhaps the most popular option today is a well-designed, energy-efficient gas fireplace, which can be installed as a completely new unit or in the cavity of an existing wood fireplace.

Today’s gas fireplaces produce a realistic yellow flame that mirrors that of a wood-burning stove. They produce fewer emissions than a conventional wood fireplace, are more convenient and safer to use, and are mess-free.

Buyers should be aware, however, that gas fireplaces are not all equal. Some designs are extremely efficient, provide substantial heat and produce fewer greenhouse gas emissions. Others can be very inefficient and can cause indoor air quality problems.

From an energy efficiency perspective, look in the manufacturer’s literature for Canada’s EnerGuide Fireplace Efficiency rating – the higher the number, the better. Some units have ratings as low as 30 percent, but the most energy-efficient units currently achieve ratings in the 50 percentto 70 percent range. Natural Resources Canada’s Office of Energy Efficiency publishes an information booklet that can help you make an informed choice about your new gas fireplace.
