New EnerGuide Gas Fireplace Rating System
(270 words)
The EnerGuide rating system has found its way into the world of gas fireplaces, and consumers and the environment stand to be the biggest winners.
By selecting the most energy-efficient gas fireplace that meets their needs, Canadian homeowners can lower their monthly energy costs and reduce their production of greenhouse gases and other pollutants.
The new rating system came into effect in October 2003 through an agreement between Natural Resources Canada and the Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Institute of Canada. In addition to having the support of the Government of Canada, this industry-managed program has been endorsed by the Hearth Patio and Barbecue Association of Canada, hearth manufacturers and natural gas utilities across the country.
All gas fireplaces sold in Canada must now be tested using a government-approved testing method. The result is an accurate Fireplace Efficiency rating, expressed as a percentage, that reflects the overall operation of the fireplace throughout the heating season. Look for the Canada’s EnerGuide Fireplace Efficiency rating in manufacturers' literature. Some units have ratings as low as 30 percent, but the most energy-efficient models currently achieve ratings in the 50 percent to 70 percent range.
