Stampville, the Canadian Postal Museum's New Interactive CD-ROM

Hull, Quebec, 12 November 1997 — The Canadian Postal Museum and the Canadian Museum of Civilization, in association with Canada Post, have produced Stampville, a brand-new interactive CD-ROM. Bilingual, beautifully illustrated and user-friendly, Stampville contains hundreds of pages on the history of mail in Canada and around the world. This is the only CD-ROM to offer a complete interactive catalogue of Canadian postage stamps from 1851 to 1996. As well, Stampville features a panoply of activities, games, stamps and stories that will entertain and educate children 8 years and over, not of mention the whole family.

"Stampville provides access to the wealth of information from the Canadian Postal Museum and to the only complete collection of Canadian stamps that reflect the identity, culture and history of this vast country," declared Dr. George MacDonald, CEO of the Canadian Museum of Civilization Corporation.

"Stampville combines the latest information technology with one of the world's oldest hobbies, stamp collecting. Canada Post enjoyed the opportunity to work once again with the Canadian Postal Museum and I am certain that Stampville will be a great success," stated David Bowden, General Manager, Marketing for Canada Post.

From the ancient scribes to modern postal technology, Stampville guides users on a fascinating journey through time and space, providing answers to even the most thought-provoking questions along the way. The possibilities are endless: at the stamp factory, learn everything you can about stamp production, from the design to the final printing; at the games arcade, you can test your skills against the shooting star of air mail; at the library — which houses more than 1,600 stamp images — you can set up your own electronic collection. As well, you can read the private correspondence of celebrities, see what the very first letter ever written looked like, learn how mail was sent in the days before the invention of stamps, find out why certain countries cannot use Elvis on their stamps, or admire the curator's choice of the most beautiful stamps in the world.

Thanks to the enormous range of subjects touched upon, philately provides an entertaining and stimulating introduction to such diverse areas as engineering, crafts, Native peoples, science, animals, shipwrecks and famous explorers.

The new CD-ROM comes highly recommended by the Ottawa Citizen's philatelic columnist Charles Verge, Vice-President of the Royal Philatelic Society of Canada. He recently wrote that adults will also find Stampville interesting, since he himself spent several hours exploring it!

Stampville can be tested in the Canadian Postal Museum's Virtually Yours interactive station. It is available for $34.95 at several Canada Post outlets, the Canadian Museum of Civilization's Boutique, via e-mail at publications@civilization.ca, or through the National Philatelic Centre at 1-800-565-4362 (Canada and the United States) or at (902) 863-6550 (other countries). Stampville is compatible with operating systems Windows 3.1, Windows 95 and Macintosh.
