Pitney Bowes Art Gallery
Permanent Feature of the Canadian Postal Museum

Hull, Quebec, June 11, 1997 — On the occasion of the opening of the permanent site of the Canadian Postal Museum (CPM) on June 12, 1997, the Canadian Museum of Civilization (CMC) is very pleased to inaugurate the Pitney Bowes Art Gallery, a 500 square foot gallery celebrating the tradition of art and mail.

As the original makers of the postage metre more than 70 years ago, Pitney Bowes holds a valued place in the history of Canada's mail service. The company has made a generous gift of $60,000 to support programming in the Art Gallery for a period of five years. Pitney Bowes is also providing antique postage metres from its own collection for display in the Canadian Postal Museum.

"Pitney Bowes is proud to be associated with the Canadian Postal Museum in the Canadian Museum of Civilization and with the history of postal affairs in Canada, a history that has led to Canada enjoying the benefits of the finest postal system in the world," states Frederick Van Parys, President and CEO of Pitney Bowes Canada.

The Pitney Bowes Art Gallery will showcase artwork designed or used for postage stamps. It will exhibit works from the "mail art" genre, pieces that incorporate postcards, letters, postmarks and other postal paraphernalia that are considered art only when they have been sent through the mail. It will also display art inspired by the theme of the post.

The inaugural exhibition in the Pitney Bowes Art Gallery is Collages: Mixed Media Works by Edna Myers.
