Victor Rabinovitch named President and Chief Executive Officer of the Canadian Museum of Civilization Corporation

Hull, Quebec, March 20, 2000 — The Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Canadian Museum of Civilization Corporation, Dr. John English, is pleased to announce the appointment of Victor Rabinovitch as the new President and Chief Executive Officer of the Canadian Museum of Civilization Corporation. The Corporation comprises the Canadian Museum of Civilization and the Canadian War Museum.

The Honourable Sheila Copps, Minister of Canadian Heritage, stated that, "Victor Rabinovitch is dedicated to strengthening Canada's vibrant cultural life. I am very pleased that he has accepted the challenge of taking the country's largest and most popular museum into the next century as it continues to celebrate Canadian history and diversity."

Speaking as Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Dr. English said, "The Board is confident that Mr. Rabinovitch will continue his strong record of achievement in cultural and community action and carry the Museums to new levels of excellence. The recently announced project to build a Canadian War Museum will be one of his many challenges." Dr. English also underlined the Corporation's gratitude to Joe Geurts for having ensured excellent leadership as Acting President and CEO during the interim.

Victor Rabinovitch served as Assistant Deputy Minister for Cultural Development and Heritage, Canadian Heritage, from 1995 to 1998, where he was responsible for policies and programs in broadcasting, cinema, publishing, sound recording, copyright, museums and performing arts. Most recently, Mr. Rabinovitch served as Assistant Deputy Minister of Income Security Programs, responsible for the administration of Canada's public pensions.

Mr. Rabinovitch began his federal public service career in 1982 and later served as Assistant Deputy Minister of Fisheries and Oceans. He holds a B.A. in Economics and Political Science from McGill University and a Doctorate from Sussex University, in England. His most recent publication on culture is entitled "Method and Success in Canada's Cultural Policies" published in the Queen's Quarterly, summer 1999. Mr. Rabinovitch is married with two children.

Today's announcement is the result of a search by the Board of Trustees of the Corporation. Heading as complex and high-profile a cultural institution as the Canadian Museum of Civilization Corporation requires both vision and managerial expertise, qualities that Mr. Rabinovitch has proven. The appointment is for a term of five years.
