Canadian Environmental Sustainability Indicators

Canadians need clearly defined environmental indicators -- measuring sticks that can track the results that have been achieved through the efforts of governments, industries and individuals to protect and improve the environment. The selected indicators in this second annual report are as follows: the air quality indicator, the greenhouse gas emissions indicator and the freshwater quality indicator.

Economics and Sustainability

Economics Development is necessary to Canada's economic stability and the financial well-being of Canadians. Since economic decisions can have direct impacts on the environment, development must be undertaken in a sustainable manner that does not deplete our natural capital.

This approach relies on the participation of citizens industry, and governments in activities that achieve results without jeopardizing the future of our resources. Adopting it will also sharpen Canada's global competitiveness.
