Denis Coderre Announces a Partnership with the Quebec Foundation for Athletic Excellence

MONTREAL, October 12, 2000 -- The Secretary of State (Amateur Sport), Denis Coderre, today announced a pilot project with an investment of one million dollars in the Quebec Foundation for Athletic Excellence. This amount will be spread out over five years, in installments of $200,000 per year. Mr. Coderre made this announcement in Montreal in the presence of the President of Videotron and chair of the Québec Foundation for Athletic Excellence, Claude Chagnon and judoka Olympic silver medallist, Nicolas Gill.

The Foundation for athletic excellence is one of the major players on the Quebec sports scene. This new investment from the Government of Canada will allow the Foundation to ensure that athletes that do not reside in Quebec, but who must live there to train, will have increased access to programs and bursaries from the Foundation. Thanks to the financial assistance from the Government of Canada, these programs will continue to support Quebec athletes who must train elsewhere in Canada.

"This partnership will benefit our athletes who use national training centres outside Quebec as well as those who wish to establish themselves in Quebec," said Mr. Coderre who also pointed out that this new partnership would pave the road towards collaboration in other sectors of activity connected to sports excellence development.

"This association is a good example of a partnership whose benefits will inevitably translate into increased support for athletes," declared Mr. Chagnon. "The Government of Canada is thereby supporting the Foundation in its process of solliciting the private sector." Mr. Chagnon also indicated that the Secretary of State for Amateur Sport could count on the Foundation's support in the development and implementation of a new sports policy for the country.
