Denis Coderre Launches a Series of Activities Leading to the National Summit on Sport

OTTAWA, April 24, 2001 -- Secretary of State (Amateur Sport) Denis Coderre today launched a series of activities leading to the National Summit on Sport which will take place April 27 and 28 in Ottawa. The Summit represents the culmination of a series of regional consultations and round tables which took place over the last few months from one end of the country to the other to help develop a Canadian sport policy.

Mr. Coderre today pointed out the importance of participation and excellence in amateur sport. He first participated in a health circuit and hip hop session and then stopped at the Canada Games Caravan where sports activities had been organized. Among the participants present at Major Hill's Park for the event were Members of Parliament and Senators, athletes, and other members of the Canadian sport community. Later today, a special tribute will be made to Olympic, Paralympic and Special Olympic athletes and a reception will be held in their honour.

"All of the activities organized this week will underscore the elements that are essential to the success of our new policy," declared Mr. Coderre. "I am happy to be surrounded by my colleagues and so many participants, particularly such inspiring models as our athletes, to launch the National Summit on Sport."

Mr. Coderre made available a discussion document entitled Building Canada Through Sport: Towards a Canadian Sport Policy, which will be at the centre of discussions during the National Summit on Sport. This document will also be one of the elements of discussion at the meeting of federal, provincial and territorial ministers responsible for sport, which will take place on April 26 in Ottawa. Moreover, Mr. Coderre presented the results compiled from the surveys conducted in each of the regions where a regional conference was held. The discussion document and the results of the survey, as well as information on the National Summit on Sport, are available on the Web at www.amateur-sport.gc.ca.
