Sheila Copps Announces Funding for the Foundation for Athletes and Sport Training

TORONTO, May 23, 2001 -- Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps today announced funding of $400,000 for the Foundation for Athletes and Sport Training (FAST). The Minister made the announcement at the opening of the 64th World Congress for the International Sports Press Association (AIPS), which is taking place in Toronto from May 23 -- May 25, 2001.

"The Government of Canada is a proud supporter of Toronto's candidacy for the 2008 Games and the significant and lasting legacy it will create for Canadian athletes," said Minister Copps. "FAST plays an important role because it supports athletes from novice to national levels. This funding will help many young Canadians train to become the next generation of Olympic and Paralympic athletes."

FAST is a non-profit national foundation, created in September 2000 by the Toronto 2008 Olympic and Paralympic Bid (TO-Bid) to support junior athletes across Canada. The Foundation also educates the public on the health and social benefits of sport and recreation. FAST is funded through a unique private-public partnership which brings together the federal and provincial governments along with the TO-Bid and private sector donors.

Funding for this project was provided for in the February 2000 federal budget and is therefore built into the existing fiscal framework.
